Despite the announcement of strike, we continued working and being committed to the future

Communiqué to the Antamina family

  • Strike called by the Trade Union of Workers was partially obeyed. A significant group of employees decided to choose the future and fulfill their duties.
  • Our production activities are being developed within the framework of a contingency plan for this situation.

Today, November 10, was launched the strike called by the Trade Union of Workers of Antamina (SUTRACOMASA).  We wish to inform you that this strike has been partially obeyed.  Despite being a legal requirement when deciding to opt for a strike, the strikers decided not to leave the workplace. The strike was conducted peacefully.

However, though some have gone on strike, others have decided to choose the future and fulfill their duties. We want to thank and congratulate them as they have helped us to develop the contingency plan set for this situation; this, beyond expectations.  Our company wants to render public acknowledgment and the necessary safeguards in the performance of their duties to this group of collaborators, and to all those who in the recent hours have contacted their supervisors to continue working.

Antamina reiterates its willingness to dialogue and invokes SUTRACOMASA Union Leaders to reflection. At the same time, we ask you help us maintain a calm and truthful environment; as we want to emphatically deny that during these hours any accident has occurred in our operations. It is not true that a truck or a shovel have been involved in any incident.

The strike called by the Union claims that we will receive lower profits from a profit-sharing plan (Peruvian legal requirement) this year. Profits depend, among other things, from income variables beyond our control, such as world prices of metals we produce. Also from our production levels which in this period will be somewhat lower than in previous years. It should be noted that profits are calculated according to very clear guidelines established by law and which we must strictly follow.  It is not true that the strike is a fighting platform against such issues as breaches of the collective agreement or concerns about health and safety, as it can be clearly seen on the very notice submitted by SUTRACOMASA to the company and to the Ministerio de Trabajo y Promoción del Empleo.

The last collective agreement signed with the Union is valid and is in full compliance. The above-mentioned agreement expires in July 2015. Antamina has violated no agreement or labor law. This is why, among other reasons, the Dirección de Trabajo (Department of Labor) has declared this strike inadmissible.

We call the Union to establish a process of understanding without a strike that affects the dialogue. The collaborators who have decided to choose to work and a shared future, our deepest thanks. Finally, we ask you help us spread this communication with those who do not have email.

Sincerely:

Silvio Brigneti
