  • The decision is the result of the dialogue taking place within the framework of the Health Committee with the participation of authorities, representatives of the Cajacay community and Antamina
  • Officials from different Government agencies monitored events at the VS1 valve station in Santa Rosa.

Antamina delivered on the agreements reached with the Health Committee that was set up following the incident caused by a break in the bottom section of a pipe elbow inside the VS1 valve station last July 25th, that led to a leak of copper concentrate.

A few days ago, the Health Committee comprised of government authorities, representative leaders of the local community and our company, reached an agreement in Cajacay and afterward in Lima, in conjunction with representatives from the Medical College of Peru, to set up and implement a specialized medical health care team, funded by Antamina, which entailed the hiring of a toxicologist, a pediatrician, a general practitioner, an internist, a radiologist and two nurses, along with laboratory staff and an X Ray technician, all of whom have already arrived in Santa Rosa and have begun providing health care services to the local population of that community.

As an overall summary of what has occurred thus far, we wish to inform the public that according to information provided by the different public health authorities in this area, a total of 210 people have received health care services. 42 persons were hospitalized at the San Pablo Clinic in Huaraz, 39 of whom have been released and 3 have remained under medical observation.

Antamina expresses its satisfaction with the peaceful atmosphere and openness to dialogue that has existed while bringing this involuntary break of the pipe elbow inside the VS1 valve station in Santa Rosa to a successful conclusion. The health and well being of all community members is a priority to which we are fully committed.

Currently there are representatives of different authorities of the Peruvian National Government, Regional and Municipal Government present in this jurisdiction who today monitored the cleanup work being carried out at the site of the incident.

Cleanup operations are now 98% complete. Antamina teams are working very hard to conclude their mission.
