Sustainability Report 2015
The achievements motivate us to continue working as a world-class mining operation, safe, careful of the environment and catalyzing development.
Letter from the President & CEO
It is a pleasure to share with you our seventh Sustainability Report for the year of 2015, we present the economic, social and environmental dimensions of our business performance.
The year of 2015 has been a year of most stability in global metal prices.
This has led to a little improvement in relation to 2014, however we are managing all possible risks that could appear during our operation. In addition, 2015 has been a period with important achievements, thanks to the commitment of our people, which has contributed in looking for opportunities to improve inside and outside of our organization.
During 2015, for the fourth consecutive year, our company has been prominent among the “Top 10 Companies with the best reputation in Peru” and for the third consecutive year among the “Top 10 Most Admired Companies in Peru”, besides being considered in first place in the ranking of the mining sector. We have also been recognized as the first mining company to receive the National Quality Award, by the National Society of Industries. These distinctions acknowledge our leadership in the sector.
Antamina is renowned for its ability to innovate in the search for more sustainable solutions to the challenges ahead. In this task, we are not alone. The relationship and working together with our Strategic Partners are very important. Therefore, we implemented the program “Excellence on Supplier Development” that promotes innovation and improving efficiency in our strategic partners. Through this program, we have made great improvements such as extending the average life of 20% of used tires haul trucks. This innovation is a clear example that, with minor improvements, we achieved a major positive impact on the three dimensions of the sustainable development: economic, social and environment.
On the other hand, through a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in our processes, we keep increasing the water recycling ratio in our operations (99.3%), meaning less use of natural water. We must add that the supply of fresh water from our company comes in 100% from rainwater, which is collected in dams built by Antamina. Thanks to this initiative, we do not draw water from ponds and rivers, allowing us to maintain a relationship of trust with our local communities, encouraging us to continue our improvement process with a socio-environmental approach.
Without a doubt, our strong commitment to social development has been fundamental to our growth, it has allowed us to have an important role in the communities where we operate, and become a promoter of local development partners. The multi-stakeholder model, applied as a new strategy for Social Management from the period of 2013, continues to consolidate through the achievement of strategic alliances and high impact projects at our Operational Area of Influence.
Our company maintains a solid foundation of ethics and integrity, and we expect everyone to do what is right in all situations. Our Code of Conduct and our Corporate Policies establish rules and behavioral expectations, which are widely communicated to our own employees as well as our strategic partners.
In the workplace, we strive to create a healthy and safe environment, maintaining a culture of “zero” accidents according to the 2015 plan. In addition, we have reduced the frequency and severity index. Our culture on preventing
accidents is based on constant training, identification and control of critical risks under a policy that rejects the work in unsafe conditions, by our employees and strategic partners.
In Antamina, we promote a wellness space where all our employees are treated with respect and equal opportunities for personal and professional development. During 2015, thanks to everybody’s commitment, we have highlighted within the Top 10 Best Companies to Work For 2015 and in the Top 10 Most Attractive Companies (general ranking), where we rank first place in the mining sector.
The great challenge is to cope with efforts and integrity any scenario to overcome today and future challenges. I
would like to especially thank the daily work of each of our collaborators, who have enabled us to become a leader not only in Peru but worldwide. We are proud of the company we have become, not only because we are an exceptional team work, but also because we are a great family.
