Investing the necessary effort to initiate, develop and complete activities aimed at generating sustainable development in the province of Huarmey is one of Antamina’s principles of social responsibility.

Huarmey has about 26,000 inhabitants who earn their living mainly by fishing and agriculture. Adjoining our port operations are the inhabitants of Caleta Puerto Grande, C.P. Puerto Huarmey and AA.HH. 9 de Octubre (AA.HH. stands for Asentamientos Humanos – marginal populations).

The office of Community Relations in Huarmey has focused on health, education, fishing, agriculture and tourism as the means to improve living conditions for the population.

Health

Caring for one’s health is a preventive act and not just treatment. A sewer network, oxidation pond and a pump chamber built by the residents, the Neighborhood Board of Huarmey Port, Chimbote diocese and Compañía Minera Antamina S.A. have ensured health through sanitation.

Health treatment campaigns have also been carried out in Huarmey and Valle Fortaleza in conjunction with “Hospital de Apoyo de Huarmey” (Support Hospital) and the Health Ministry.

Education

A strategic alliance with several organizations such as local governments, “Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Huarmey”, and private institutions, such as the Americas Fund, mark the start of various projects for different population sectors in Huarmey and Valle Fortaleza.

The Program “Education, Nutrition and Talent Promotion for Working Street Children in the City of Huarmey” will allow children to improve their diet and build stronger personal and family relations. Likewise, the social project “Promotion and Defense of the Good Treatment Children in the City of Huarmey” will help 1,200 boys and girls under the age of five to improve their self-esteem.

Meanwhile, Colquioc – Valle Fortaleza district supported the formation of the Chasquitambo Center for Occupational Studies which will help in the technical preparation of the students from this farming valley.

Education for work allowed the Community Banks Project to begin in a planned and professional manner with the participation of 284 women. The project has encouraged professional, organizational skills and the desire for progress among women from Huarmey. The program is possible with the support of Fondam, Caritas Felices, the Chimbote Diocese and Compañía Minera Antamina.

The Sports Academy, which includes soccer, volleyball and basketball, has brought 100 boys, girls and young people from Huarmey, who have found a chance for recreation, training and recognition. Antamina donated sports equipment and supported those institutions that are concerned with promoting competitive sports in the province.

Fishing

Establishing the Fisherman and Ports Working Group led to the consolidation of three important projects aimed at creating sustainable working conditions for fishermen and improving the quality of life for people in Huarmey.

  1. The construction of a fish warehouse and retail center in charge of the José Olaya Pinteros Fishermen.

  2. The Project for scallop farming led by Universidad de la Molina’s Fund for Agricultural Development.

  3. The Dragger Fish Project led by the Association of Fishermen and Small Ship Owners of Puerto Grande.

Agriculture

Huarmey and the Fortaleza Valley are two predominantly agricultural valleys. Antamina worked with Fortaleza Valley farmers to provide training in raising guinea pigs and other small animals, and to provide information on crops technology, projects in charge of “Instituto Tecnológico Superior de Huarmey”.

In addition, support has been provided for the protection of the Huarmey River, which is used by the farmers in the Huarmey Valley.
