In recent years, mining companies have come under increasing
international pressure to be socially responsible towards
their neighboring communities, especially in less developed
countries. Mining companies need to obtain a “social
license” to operate, thereby creating strategic advantages
through work in community development.
To improve its performance in this area, Compañía
Minera Antamina S.A. has formed the Ancash Association, an
organization devoted to sustainable community development.
The organization promotes regional development to improve
the living conditions of the communities and towns near Antamina’s
operations. The Ancash Association places the greatest emphasis
on programs related to education for work, primary health,
and various economic activities that have the potential to
develop competitive advantages. They are implemented within
the framework of the Strategic Plans for Integral Development
for each jurisdiction.
The Ancash Association primarily promotes local initiatives
generated through consensus, working groups and other collectively
established consultation mechanisms that identify sustainable
projects, set priorities, foster cooperation between public,
private and grassroots organizations, and co-finance initiatives
with support from international technical cooperation organizations.
The Ancash Association is committed to providing continuity
and sustainability for the programs it sponsors. For this
reason, it seeks the participation of the international community
and always acts with the highest standards of efficiency and
transparency.
Recently formed, the association will develop independently
of Antamina, and in the future it will organize and direct
the community development programs currently run by Antamina.
