Antamina seeks to offer the best possible conditions to guarantee workers health and safety from the outset and during their stay in the company. We seek to identify any possible work-related risks and ensure an effective system for recovery in the event of any problems.

As a result, workers undergo a medical examination prior to beginning work and participate in an annual plan that evaluates their general and specific health conditions depending on the work they carry out. A “medical aptitude pass” is then issued by qualified medical centers, a procedure that has since been adopted by other firms.

The camp’s medical center has specialized medical and nursing staff, modern design and equipment, allowing the team to diagnose and treat common illnesses as well as to stabilize serious or critical illness or accident-related cases.

Employees take drug tests at random and immediately following an accident as part of Antamina’s drug and alcohol control program. There is zero tolerance. We have achieved a “dry” camp that is free of illegal substances. In the area of industrial hygiene we have been measuring the levels of dust and noise in the working environment in order to recommend the type of protective equipment that should be used. There is active training for personnel in the area.

At Antamina, human resources are considered valuable capital. Therefore, it is essential to make every effort to control the risks and maximize safety in work areas.

At Antamina, we are aware that we are immersed in a highly competitive world where it is necessary to control internal costs and ensure that the process, equipment and our human resources are fully operative. For this reason, we are constructing a world class, competitive organization that prioritizes quality in every aspect.

The quality of personnel implies a good safety system. To achieve this, Antamina contracted the services of ISTEC and is successfully applying its integral environment, health and safety plan. This system is a tool that places emphasis on risk management in order to ensure control of all potential losses. Specifically, it takes into account the interaction between men and machines and the role that human attitudes and mentalities play.

The ISTEC System means that a good system is better as it includes the following considerations:

Compatible with modern auto/co regulating legislation
Heavy emphasis on risk management
Emphasis on participation and consultation
Includes environmental safety and management
Compatible with international Quality Assessment norms (QA), Total Quality Management (TQM) and Health, Occupational Safety and Environment
The system is completely ISO 9000 and ISO 14 000 compatible
The system successfully integrates with existing management systems like the five-star NCSA / NOSA systems.

An operation in remote areas with a climate that includes torrential rains and snow at an altitude of 4,000 meters is not exempt from incidents and events that result in different types of losses. This affects the safety indicators but also strengthens the will to control these events.
