Antamina’s Environmental Impact Study (EIS) includes a restoration and shut down plan that covers all the facilities from the mining reserve to the Port in Huarmey.

The plan will be carried out according to Peruvian norms, with the criteria recommended by international consultants, auditors and World Bank guidelines. The recovery activities have been progressively implemented since the construction phase through the planting of native and exotic species able to adapt to the region. Preventive and corrective measures are also applied, thereby limiting the environmental impact and protecting the course of the water and sensitive habitats. The recovery and protection of organic soil as well as research to determine the vegetation and optimum conditions in the areas to be recovered are also important components for the success of the program.

Restoration is aimed at:

Establishing safe and stable zones for those who have access to restored areas.
Avoiding or minimizing the presence of landslides or avalanches.
Avoiding or minimizing the flow of sediment on slopes.
Protecting water quality in the water ways

The program involves local communities in the area of the mine and along the pipeline that transports the material. In the area surrounding the mine, more than 100 hectares have been restored exclusively using labor coming from local communities.

During the life of the operation, the closure plan will be reviewed periodically and there will be constant inspections to ensure its effectiveness.

The magnitude of the operation demands vast resources (workers, equipment and material). The installation of the camps and the plant in general generated domestic and industrial waste that required adequate management. This, however, declined significantly once the project was operational as fewer resources are being used.

A Waste Management Program has been designed to advise personnel on how to minimize, manipulate, store and dispose of different type of waste. Some industrial waste such as batteries, oil filters and material contaminated with hydrocarbons are temporarily stored in assigned areas. They are subsequently removed and turned over to companies authorized to manage, transport and dispose of such waste.
