The Conococha Lake Recovery Project developed by Compañía Minera Antamina S.A. in November 2001 arose out of concerns expressed by the Municipality of Chiquian, Province of Bolognesi, Department of Ancash, over the preservation of the existing lake ecosystem. The recovery commitment was formalized through an agreement signed between the company, the National Institute of Natural Resources (INRENA) and the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) for the purpose of guaranteeing the protection and recovery of Conococha Lake for a period of five years.
The Conococha Lake Recovery Project is aimed at permanently monitoring vital parameters for normal lake operation. Annual reports summarize environmental conditions in the lake, including temperature, rainfall, levels, flow, and water quality. Data are also provided on bird diversity and abundance, identifying population fluctuations throughout the year through quarterly censuses.
Environmental monitoring includes:
Meteorological records (rainfall and temperature).
Water quality monitoring and assessment.
Monthly evaluation of water levels and discharge flows (or drainage).
