5. 5. Solid Waste Management Program

We are determined to manage wastes properly and responsibly according to our environmental policy and the legal rules in force, without impairing the environment or public health. We take action to control contamination, mainly at the point of emission, and we also take action to minimize waste generation. Antamina’s sustainable waste management practices combine gathering, sorting, and appraisal and reutilization methods. These comprehensive waste management practices bring about environmental and economic benefits that result in the acceptance, by authorities and neighboring communities, of a versatile and practical method that can be applied by any company or town council.

Waste sorting and recycling at the point of emission is becoming increasingly popular. However, it still does not yield significant effects. At Antamina, we are already undertaking this type of recycling projects and our employees are increasingly aware of the importance of this practice, both for environmental and ecological reasons (to save natural resources by reincorporating wastes into industrial processes), as well for economic reasons (smaller gathering, transportation and disposal costs).

Antamina’s sustainable waste management practices abide by the following principles:

  • Prevention of contamination and fulfillment of applicable standards and laws, like General Solid Waste Law No. 27314 and the Regulations thereunder, supported by practices that call for waste minimization, reutilization, recycling and appropriate disposal.

  • Involvement of all the employees of Antamina and its strategic partners in waste management practices.

  • Interrelationship of all elements comprising the waste management chain: generation, sorting, collection, transportation, storage, treatment, and disposal.

  • Integration of technical, financial, environmental, social, institutional, legal and political aspects to ensure sustainability.
