Planned Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) inspections are conducted with the participation of all employees of Antamina and its Strategic Partners working in the different company areas, including mine, concentrator, access road, pipeline, Punta Lobitos Port, camps, and warehouses. These inspections, which are regularly planned, are aimed at establishing a systematic process for the identification of hazards and the evaluation of risks and unsafe practices. In addition, they are designed to determine the level of environmental compliance in each area and introduce improvements between one inspection and the next one. These audits also address community relations’ issues, communications systems, sustainable development programs, and the manner of handling environmental protection issues.
At the end of each inspection, a report is prepared with the observations made in relation to deficiencies detected, identifying the person in charge in each area. The level of weekly and monthly compliance is then established, guaranteeing the follow-up of deficiencies.
2.1 Auditing by the Peruvian Government
Supreme Decree Nº 049-2001-EM approved the Regulations for Auditing Mining Activities, establishing that the Ministry of Energy and Mines is the competent State entity to audit mining activities through its internal or independent auditors.
Mining activities are basically audited for the following purposes:
Identify and prevent bodily injuries, occupational diseases, equipment damage, property damage and environmental damage, and identify environmental impacts.
Objectively measure work to control accidental exposures, determining the fulfillment of mining and environmental safety and hygiene rules and standards.
Promote the achievement of efficient control programs; and
Adopt corrective measures, as required.
Antamina’s operations are audited twice a year by the competent authority (Ministry of Energy and Mines). The reports issued upon completion of said audits are reviewed by Antamina to correct the observations made during the audit and improve environmental performance.
