Within the framework of our social responsibility and environmental
policies, Compañía Minera Antamina S.A. advocates
and facilitates the direct participation of communities in
constant environmental monitoring. We have created environmental
committees, both in San Marcos and in Huarmey, that supervise
and carry out joint periodic monitoring in partnership with
the company and different health, agricultural and environmental
authorities.
Environmental Committees
As a Antamina initiative, an Environment Committee was created
in San Marcos in August 1999, and in Huarmey in September
2000. A permanent channel of communication has been established
between Antamina and the committees, greatly improving the relationship
with local authorities and communities in the area of influence.
All of this is developed through:
 |
Meetings with the committees where
Antamina presents the quarterly results of the environmental
monitoring and control program. |
 |
Visits to the mine by local authorities
who participate in monitoring processes and to verify
progress in processes that have local environmental impact. |
 |
The direct participation of Antamina
in community assemblies where company officials report
and resolve doubts and concerns, not only regarding the
company but also regarding environmental issues of local
interest. |
 |
The implementation of a communication
plan that includes training local environmental promoters,
strengthening the Committee and the written and radio
dissemination of the mine’s actions. |
 |
The implementation of a system
to manage complaints and demands with the active participation
of the committees. |
 |
The approval of a planning project
for forestry development in the district of San Marcos
in agreement with the Committee and the Mountain Institute. |
