Once the mineral concentrates are filtered in the Punta Lobitos
filter plant, they are sent to storage through a hermetic
conveyer belt system, retaining 8.5 to 9.0 percent of their
humidity. They are then classified (zinc, copper with low
bismuth, copper with high bismuth, etc.) and await their final
destination. The Punta Lobitos storage
facility can store up to 160,000 tons of concentrates. The
facility has negative gravity keeping the concentrates from
entering the environment and preventing any possible contamination.
The Punta Lobitos dock has very
particular characteristics. Nearly 280 meters long, the dock
quickly reaches a depth of 28 meters which allows ships with
up to 50,000 tons of capacity to dock and load a few meters
from shore.
To avoid any possible ocean contamination due to a concentrate
spill or loss, Antamina designed its dock using a system of
closed conveyer belts that travel above the structure, ensuring
that the wind does not blow any minerals out to sea. The belts
culminate in a telescopic ship loader that deposits the concentrates
directly into the ship’s hold. Punta Lobitos is a mining
port that meets the highest and most demanding safety and
environmental control regulations, maintaining a perfect balance
between mining activity and the environment.
