In July 2001, Compañía Minera Antamina S.A. inaugurated the Punta Lobitos Port facilities. Designed to export copper and zinc concentrates from Antamina, the terminal has coastal and marine facilities to receive, filter and store concentrates, as well as a 271-meter long dock that includes a hermetic conveyer belt for concentrates.

The Punta Lobitos Port is located one km West of Huarmey, a town 140 km South of Chimbote and 300 km North of Lima, at a latitude of 10°05.66 S and a longitude of 78°10.84 W.

The Punta Lobitos facilities include:

 
 
Storage tanks to receive and store the concentrate from the pipeline.
Agitators to keep the material in suspension in the tanks.
Pressure filters to separate the solids from the water.
Water treatment plant to recover the water that comes from the pipeline.
A tank to store treated water that is later pumped to an irrigation system for the reforestación project.
A storage building for concentrates with the capacity to store more than 160,000 tons.
Comfortable housing for 280 workers that includes recreational areas, a common dining room run by the Eurest firm, laundry facilities, cable television services, among others.

The marine facilities in Punta Lobitos consist of:

A 271-meter long dolphin-type dock with a transport conveyer belt and floating defense mechanisms.
A ship loader capable of loading an average 1,400 tons of mineral concentrates an hour on a continuous basis.
A service platform for ship loader maintenance.
Six buoys for incoming ships.
Navigation aid to help ships enter the area.
   


 

 
The Mine The Concentrator  Port
